OVERVIEW
The overall situation of Leh and surrounding areas seem to be getting under control and the death toll till 8th August 2010, 3.30 pm was 154 as per the DDC report and the missing are still more than 500. The problem seems that most of the missing is non local and they are labourers from Doda and Bihar, so it’s quite difficult to identify them and to make the numbers accurate. The injured people are being treated in the civil hospital as well as in army hospital, the problem seems to be the disposal of death bodies lying near the hospital as most of the bodies can’t be identified and the people are demanding to shift the dead bodies to their own places like Jammu and other areas. Most of the Government departments are functional and doing their activities as usual, the fuel at filling stations seems to be under stock and they are rationing while supplying to people.
The communication services like BSNL is still not working and hence there are lots of problems of telephone and internet. Leh – Kargil – Srinagar and Leh – Manali roads are still blocked at certain places and people are stranded at both the sites. The Govt. has arranged additional flights to Delhi to clear the stranded passengers at Leh.
The NGOs, social and religious agencies are in the field for relief doing their best to reach out to the affected people in different areas. DDC has allocated certain villages to different agencies to avoid duplicity. AMI has been allocated village Choglamsar. AMI is also supporting the villagers of Saboo, Phiyang and at Skampari because the victims are reporting to the AMI centre at Leh for help.
